Jesus, the Almighty God

Revelation 1 is full of incredible titles of Jesus. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He is the faithful witness. He is the first begotten from the dead. Possibly the greatest of Jesus’ marvelous names is this: The Almighty.

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”
Revelation 1:8

Jesus is the Almighty God. This title has a direct connection to Genesis 17:1 where God tells Abraham that He is the Almighty God. Almighty is used dozens of times in the Old Testament and was the primary name by which the patriarchs in Genesis knew God. The application of this name to Jesus means Jesus is the all-powerful God of the Old Testament. All the Old Testament says about God can be applied directly to Jesus. He is the Eternal One, marvelous, compassionate, gracious, patient, merciful, holy and just. All that is revealed about God in the Old Testament is also true of Jesus.

The book of Revelation uses Almighty interchangeably between God the Father and Jesus. In Revelation 19:6 the saints and angels of heaven shout with thundering voices, “Alleluia, for the Lord God Almighty reigneth.” The Lord God Almighty is the temple of the New Jerusalem. Both references to God the Father. Revelation 4:8 describes the Heavenly throne room. Angels surround the throne of God crying out, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.” The angels of heaven worship Jesus declaring Him to be God. Jesus is the God of Revelation and absolutely equal with God the Father. The book of Revelation is yet another undeniable Biblical claim of the Deity of Jesus.

The title Almighty says many things about Jesus. He is the Sovereign Lord of all creation and the Ruler of all rulers. This truth is made evident at the end of Revelation. Jesus will return to conquer all the nations of the world. He will overthrow every rebel and establish His perfect rule upon the earth. He is the judge of all men. When He returns to establish His eternal kingdom He will judge the living and the dead. (2 Timothy 4:1) One day soon all men will stand before Him to be judged for how they have responded to His gospel. As the Almighty God, all rulers of the world are under the authority of Jesus. Satan may be the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2) and the prince of this world (John 16:11) but the King of kings reigns supreme over Satan . Jesus reigns over every diabolical kingdom the devil attempts to establish. Jesus has truly set up every government. Jesus has appointed every ruler for our good and to accomplish His eternal purposes. Even though presidents, kings, queens, chancellors, prime ministers, chairmen and supreme leaders attempt to rule for their owns selfish purposes Jesus overrules them all and accomplishes His perfect will. Jesus is truly God who rules all, conquers all and will judge all.

Jesus, the Almighty God, deserves all our worship. He deserves and demands our obedience. He deserves our trust in His justice and His Sovereign rule because He is infinitely gracious, wise and trustworthy.
