To aid in meditating upon what it means to abide in Christ, I have borrowed and modified another’s outline. “The following Biblical images are various ways of describing what it means to practice God’s presence; they’re all ongoing practices—not once-and-done actions.”
• Abide in Christ (John 15:4–5)
• Love God and neighbor (Matthew 22:37–40)
• Walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16, 25)
• Put to death the flesh (Romans 8:5-14)
• Set your heart on things above (Colossians 3:1–2)
• Pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
• Submit yourself as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1–2)
• Know Jesus and the power of His resurrection (Philippians 3:9–14)
• Meditate on the things of God (Philippians 4:6–8)
• Give Scripture an abundant dwelling in you (Colossians 3:16)
A.W. Tozer said, “True Christian communion consists in the sharing of a Presence. This is not poetry merely, but a fact taught in bold letters in the New Testament. God has given us Himself in the Person of his Son. ‘Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.’ The immanence of God in His universe makes possible the enjoyment of the “real Presence” by the saints of God.”
I encourage you to meditate on these various descriptions of maintaining a close relationship with God. Meditate on these things so you may know His obvious presence in your life each day.
